Dreadplate Regalia

EverGrims Werks forges. The Reaper collects. The Dreadplate is what happens when the first one builds for the second.

Twenty-four netherite blocks go into the werkshop and a robe comes back out — blackened steel over the skull and the chest, soul-dyed cloth over everything else. It does not make you faster. It makes you quieter, and it takes a fifth to a third less when the hit lands anyway.

Three soul wisps ride at the ribs — on Bedrock, where armor has a body of its own to hang them off. They are the collected, following their collector. They do not help. They are the count, walking behind you where you cannot see it.

The armor

One tier above netherite. Every piece is fire resistant, enchants and repairs exactly like netherite gear, and protection enchantments stack the same way.

Netherite, for comparison: 20 armor, 12 toughness, 0.4 knockback resistance.

What that actually saves you. Damage taken from a hit of size d, wearing a full set:

Incoming hit Diamond Netherite Dreadplate vs netherite
5 1.25 1.20 1.00 −17 %
10 3.00 2.80 2.00 −29 %
20 8.00 7.20 5.31 −26 %
40 24.00 20.80 16.44 −21 %

Diamond to netherite is a 4–13 % step. This is 17–29 %. Stronger, not absurd — the 80 % damage cap still applies, and you can still die.

Recipes

Each armour piece needs one soul sand. The full set costs 24 netherite blocks and 4 soul sand. Use a crafting table and leave blank slots empty.

Grims Scythe

Not a duelist's weapon. It is for the many.

Grims Scythe Netherite sword Netherite axe
Attack damage 8.5 8 10
Attack speed 1.2 / s 1.6 / s 1.0 / s
Single-target DPS (full charge) 10.2 12.8 10.0
Sweep 5.25 per swept mob 1.0 per mob cannot sweep
Shield hook disables shields 2.5 s 0 s 5 s
Reach 3.0 (vanilla) 3.0 3.0
Durability 2031 2031 2031

What makes it different:

  • Slower, heavier swing. 1.2 swings per second instead of 1.6, and the swing animation is a 9-tick whack rather than a flick. Against a single target you do less damage per minute than a netherite sword. That is deliberate.
  • It sweeps properly. The scythe has Sweeping Edge I built in, so every mob caught in the sweep takes 5.25 instead of the usual 1.0. Put a real Sweeping Edge III on it and the sweep clamps at full ratio — 9.5 per swept mob. This is where the weapon earns its keep.
  • The shield hook. A hit takes the target's shield out of the fight for 2.5 seconds. A netherite axe does 5 seconds; a sword does none. The scythe sits in the middle and swings faster than the axe.

Enchant and repair it like any netherite sword. It is fire resistant.

The Wings (admin-only test items)

Both pairs are prototypes. Neither has a recipe — an admin hands them out. They are not finished, so if you get a pair, you are being asked to report back on how they wear and fly.

Dreadplate Wings v1 — a real elytra underneath. Soul-silk on dark bone struts off a brass hinge gear.

  • 432 durability, 0 armor, repaired with phantom membrane.
  • Glides normally on Java.
  • Does not take damage when you get hurt.
  • On Bedrock you get one or the other, and your admin chooses which: as shipped you see the real wings and cannot glide, because a custom-modelled item loses Bedrock gliding. Delete one mapping file and it is the other way round — normal gliding, plain vanilla elytra.

Dreadplate Wings v2 — the cloak itself, cut to catch air, with the chest plating kept.

  • Takes the chestplate's stats: 8 armor, 3.5 toughness, 0.125 knockback resistance, 672 durability.
  • Occupies your chest slot, so you cannot wear it and the chestplate together.
  • Never glides on Bedrock. A custom-modelled item cannot, and v2 has no vanilla fallback to switch to. On Java it glides.

What Bedrock players see vs Java players

Same stats, same recipes, same damage numbers, same sweep, same shield hook, same reach, same swing length. The server does the maths, so nobody has an advantage. What differs is what the armor looks like on your screen.

Both platforms get: the 3D helmet, the purple robe, the blackened steel, the bone jaw and swept horns, the brass temple gear, the soul-glow eyes, and the full 3D Grims Scythe with its swirling vial.

Bedrock only — real geometry hung on the player:

  • The 3D cloak, swaying as you walk, with its lining, neck roll, tattered hem and a glowing sigil at the back.
  • The skirt panels — two in front, one behind — that follow your stride and tuck away when you sneak, ride or swim.
  • The three soul wisps orbiting your ribs.
  • The hourglass lantern swinging at your hip.
  • Soul-fire footsteps — a trail of burning footprints left where you stepped.
  • Soul wisps off the scythe while you swing it.
  • Real 3D gorget, pauldrons, bracers, bell cuffs, toe caps and heel plates instead of paint.

Java only:

  • The painted armor layers — everything above is painted onto your player model instead of built out of it.
  • A cloak panel in the cape slot, which splays like elytra wings when you sneak. It replaces your own cape while worn.
  • The animated rune trim — a lilac wave running along the rune chains on the chestplate, leggings and boots.
  • The visor: a dark hood frame at the edge of your screen in first person while the helmet is on, to pull your eye to the centre. It hides while you use a spyglass.
  • With ETF or shaders installed, the emissive parts (the brooch, the wing veins, the cloak sigil) burn properly instead of just being bright-coloured pixels.

One more difference worth knowing: on Bedrock, if you are wearing your own cape, the Dreadplate's 3D cloak politely gets out of the way and your cape shows instead. That is on purpose, not a bug.

FAQ

Why can't I see the wisps on Java? Because Java has nowhere to put them. Worn armor on Java is painted onto your player model — it has no body of its own to hang things off. Bedrock renders armor as an attachable, which can carry extra geometry, so that is where the wisps, the cloak, the skirt panels and the lantern live. It is not a missing feature on your end and there is no mod that will switch it on. Java's compensation is the animated rune trim, the visor and the ETF glow, which Bedrock does not get.

Why did my wings not glide on Bedrock? Almost certainly you have v2. v2 is a netherite chestplate with a glider bolted on, and Bedrock will not honour that — it glides on Java and never on Bedrock. That is how it works, not a broken install. If it was v1, that is how the set ships, not a fault. v1 is mapped through its own file so you see the real wings, and a custom-modelled item cannot glide on Bedrock — look or gliding, not both. Your admin can delete that one file to swap it the other way, for everyone, and trade the wings back for a plain vanilla elytra that flies. Which way the server runs is their call, so tell them which you would rather have. One other cause: if another plugin on the server maps custom items onto the vanilla elytra, it can take Bedrock gliding away from the Wings entirely. Your admin will see a warning about that in the logs.

Can I re-trim the armor? No, and the smithing table will not let you try. Put a Dreadplate piece in with any trim template and the result slot stays empty. This is deliberate: on Bedrock, custom armor carrying a normal smithing trim is a known crash for phone and console players, so the set locks re-trimming on the Java side rather than risk it. You will not lose the template or the material — you just get nothing. The chestplate, leggings and boots already ship wearing their own Soul Runes trim, which is the look the set was designed around; the helmet carries its detail in the model instead.

Does it work on my phone? Yes, on anything mid-range or better. The set drops detail with distance rather than all at once: up close you get all three wisps and the full cloak, further out the panels merge and one wisp remains, and at long range it falls back to the silhouette — purple robe, pale jaw, two swept horns. The very oldest phones are not a target and were never going to run this. If you are on mobile data, the pack was deliberately kept small.

Why is my scythe worse than my sword? Against one mob, it is — on purpose. 10.2 damage per second against 12.8. The scythe pays for that everywhere else: it sweeps a crowd for 5.25 a head instead of 1.0, and it hooks shields. Bring the sword to a duel and the scythe to a horde.

My cloak vanished on Bedrock. Check whether you are wearing a cape. The Dreadplate's cloak yields to your own cape rather than clipping through it.

Do the wisps or the footsteps do anything? No. They are cosmetic. The wisps do not fight, block, or buff — they follow.

Does anything here hurt my framerate? The whole set is budgeted as a single wearer's worth of detail and gets lighter the further away other players are. A crowd of Dreadplate wearers costs less than it looks like it should.
