For players
How the creatures work
Werks-Engine gives Java and Bedrock players the same animals, ownership and behavior. Natural spawning is disabled in the bundled defaults; when enabled, each species still needs the right habitat, light, terrain and population space.
Meeting wild animals
| Behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Passive | Watches a nearby Survival or Adventure player, then flees if you approach too closely. Sprinting frightens it earlier, and damage causes a short panic. |
| Defensive | Does not attack just because you approach. It retaliates against an attacker, then disengages when its time or range limit is reached. |
| Territorial | A wild crab warns before attacking a player who lingers nearby. Give it room to settle. |
| Hostile | Stonemaw and the five new hostile species seek nearby Survival or Adventure players except in Peaceful. They remember targets briefly, chase about 32 blocks, and can call nearby members of their kind. |
A calm approach with the correct taming item in your main hand suppresses ordinary approach fear. Stop sprinting and give an animal time to settle after it has been hurt. Passive animals do not react to Creative or Spectator players.
Taming and ownership
- Find the item listed for the species below.
- Walk toward the animal with that item in your main hand and let it calm down.
- Right-click or use the animal. Successful taming consumes one item in Survival or Adventure; Creative consumes none. There is no random taming roll.
- Sneak-right-click with an empty main hand to switch your pet between Follow and Stay.
Ordinary wildlife uses normal vanilla items. The mecha tortoise is the exception: it needs the special Control Core created with /werks item mecha_tortoise; ordinary redstone does not work. Another player cannot retame your animal or change its Follow or Stay state.
The default limit is five following pets. Additional newly tamed animals stay where they are until another pet is set to Stay. Stay allows short movement inside a 3 × 1 × 3 block home area. Following pets can catch up after a teleport when loaded terrain and their habitat make a safe destination available.
Crab guard patrol
- Tame a crab with an ordinary gold nugget.
- Build a pillar from two ordinary sandstone blocks stacked vertically, with safe open ground around its base.
- Lead the following crab within three blocks of the pillar base on the same ground level.
- As its owner, sneak-right-click with an empty main hand to change Follow to Stay. A patrol confirmation means the pillar was accepted.
The pillar becomes the center of a 6 × 1 × 6 idle patrol and a 10 × 1 × 10 warning and defensive area. The owner, Creative or Spectator players, vanilla tamed pets and other engine pets are excluded from targeting.
Riding the mecha tortoise
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| Forward or back | Move along your look direction, including pitch. |
| Strafe left or right | Move sideways. |
| Jump | Rise. |
| Look down and move forward | Descend. |
| Release movement | Hover. |
| Sneak | Dismount when safe nearby dry ground is available. |
The mount does not fly itself or follow you while unoccupied. Unloaded terrain and world borders stop travel.
Using spawn eggs
Administrators can supply stackable Werks-Engine eggs through commands, shops or rewards. Right-click a block in suitable loaded habitat with the egg in either hand. A successful use creates one wild, untamed animal with normal AI and consumes one egg outside Creative. Failed placement keeps the egg.
Use dry solid ground for land animals, open air for fliers and enough water for swimmers. Eggs cannot be used on entities, dispensed or used to modify spawners. The corvid egg randomly selects one of the five crow and raven appearances.
Current roster
Adapted mobs
These are the entries included in the 0.6.1 private test build. The roster lists each mob’s taming item and configured spawning biomes; server settings can change them. Artwork includes licensed adaptations and original EGW designs. Adapting a model does not import its original mod’s abilities.
Natural spawning starts disabled. Once enabled, the listed biomes are eligible locations when habitat, light and population conditions allow. Nether Newt and Mecha Tortoise remain manual-only with the bundled defaults.
The current build has six hostile mobs plus two manual-only bosses. Hostiles and bosses are not tameable; the five additions below show their natural spawning biomes and the behavior players should expect.
Wildlife uses ordinary items for taming. Mecha Tortoise needs its special Control Core. Stonemaw and Crocodile are not tameable.

Boss encounters 2
Both bosses are manual-only. They do not naturally spawn, cannot be tamed and cannot be ridden.
- Stonemaw MatriarchNot tameable · manual spawn onlySpawning biomes: None — staff or scripted encounter only.Boss behavior: telegraphs a slam for one second, then deals 6 damage and knockback within four blocks every eight seconds. At half health she enrages, speeds up, slams more often and summons two Stonemaws. She regenerates while returning inside her 24-block leash and resets after 30 seconds without eligible players.Player defeat rewards: 100 XP, amethyst shards and one or two diamonds.
- Mecha ScorpionNot tameable · manual spawn onlySpawning biomes: None — staff or scripted encounter only.220 health · mechanical body about 2.6 blocks tall at the raised tail.Boss behavior: flame claws warn before spraying a six-block cone. Move sideways or out of the cone. The raised tail launches visible poison darts up to 16 blocks. The darts can aim up to 30° above the tail muzzle, but directly overhead is a blind spot. Solid cover blocks both weapons, and flames do not ignite terrain. At half health it enrages, moving 20% faster with shorter melee cooldowns, without summoning helpers. It uses a 24-block home leash, a 32-block boss-bar radius and a 30-second unattended reset.Player defeat rewards: 100 XP, 3–6 iron ingots and 4–8 redstone.
One world, two editions
Java and Bedrock players share the same creatures, ownership and server-side behavior. Each edition receives its own models and animations through resource packs; players do not need a client mod.
The current Bedrock setup uses the matching Werks-Engine companion extension with Geyser-Spigot on the same Paper server. Both editions need the matching resource packs.
- Companions: tame eligible wildlife, then use owner-only Follow and Stay controls. Following pets can catch up when safe, loaded terrain is available.
- Crab guards: an owned crab can patrol a sandstone-marked area and alert its owner to eligible intruders.
- Population controls: optional biome-based spawning, habitat checks and shared limits. Natural spawning starts disabled on a fresh installation.
Models, movement, interactions and crossplay behavior are still undergoing private testing. Inclusion in this list does not mean every entry has completed live testing.
