Grims Chests — New Chests Wiki
Version 0.4.10 · Paper 26.3 · Java and Bedrock
Version 0.4.0 added three chests and vouchers, 0.4.1 added the recovery path in the admin wiki, and 0.4.2 keeps shulker boxes out of chest storage (see the player wiki). The Void Chest is the new top storage tier, crafted from a Glass Chest. The Jack-in-the-Box Chest (Halloween) and the Christmas Toy Chest are holiday chests that only administrators can give. They keep their look through every upgrade. Vouchers let players redeem those command-only items, so they can go in loot crates.

| How to get it | Craft it from a Glass Chest with the Void Heart recipe | From an administrator, or a voucher | From an administrator, or a voucher |
| Storage | 45 double chests + 1 single chest (2,457 slots), plus 27 physical slots | Starts as a Double Chest (54 slots) and upgrades through every tier | Starts as a Double Chest (54 slots) and upgrades through every tier |
| Look | Glass Chest shape with animated end-portal void panes | Weathered Halloween toy box with a pumpkin-headed jack | Red toy chest with a green lid and bow, garland and twinkling lights |
| Special | Its menu shows only its 46 chests | The jack pops up when opened or powered by redstone | A tree springs up when opened or powered by redstone |
Void Chest
The Void Chest is the highest storage tier, one step after Glass. It is built like a Glass Chest, but its large panes show the drifting end-portal void. The void has depth inside the lid and on the floor, so you look down into it when the lid opens.
What it holds
| Sub-chests | Size each | Slots |
|---|---|---|
| 1–45 | 54 (double chest) | 2,430 |
| 46 | 27 (single chest) | 27 |
| Virtual storage | 2,457 | |
| Physical inventory | 27 | 27 |
That makes 45.5 double chests of storage. Like every upgraded chest, its separate 27-slot physical inventory is the only part hoppers can reach.
Crafting it: the Void Heart
Put a Grims Glass Chest item in the centre of a crafting table and surround it with the Void Heart:
Shulker Shell Nether Star Shulker Shell
Dragon's Breath Glass Chest Dragon's Breath
Shulker Shell Nether Star Shulker Shell
- 4 shulker shells in the corners
- 2 nether stars above and below the chest
- 2 Dragon's Breath on the sides
Your server may use End Crystals in place of the Dragon's Breath. The recipe book shows the version your server uses.
The Glass Chest must be the item, not a placed chest. If it's placed, move it with an issued Chest Wrench first. Use a normal crafting click with an empty cursor. Shift-click crafting is disabled.
Upgrading keeps everything:
- Your nine Glass sub-chests keep their items, names and icons.
- The chest keeps its auto-sort filter, and the 37 new sub-chests use it too.
- The owner and trusted managers carry over.
Opening it
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Interact | Opens the Void menu: its 46 chests and nothing else |
| Crouch-interact | Opens the 27-slot physical inventory |
Look at it and use /gch menu |
Opens the Void menu |
Look at it and use /gch settings |
Opens chest settings: names, icons and the auto-sort filter |
The Void menu has no other buttons. Each chest button shows its name and how full it is, for example Sub-chest 12 (40/54). The last chest shows /27 because it is a single chest. Pick a chest to open it. Close it and interact again to choose another.
Standard menu (keyboard, mouse and controller): all 46 chests fit on one six-row page.
Touch menu (phones and tablets): the chests sit in a seven-column grid, clear of the screen edges, across two pages.
| Page | Chests | Page button |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–35 (five rows of seven) | Next page, centred on the bottom row |
| 2 | 36–46 | Back, centred on the first empty row below the chests |
Chest settings list the sub-chests nine per page, or five on touch, with Previous page and Next page buttons. Pick a sub-chest to rename it or change its icon. Auto-sort filter sets one rule for the whole chest.
Filters and sorting
A Void Chest has one auto-sort filter for all 46 sub-chests, the same as every other upgraded chest. Items an Auto Sort Chest sends fill the sub-chests in order. When one is full, they carry into the next, including the final 27-slot chest. The physical inventory is never filled by sorting.
Link it to an Auto Sort Chest in the usual way: crouch-interact the Auto Sort Chest to start link mode, interact with the Void Chest, and choose Confirm link.
Moving and carrying
Move it with an issued Chest Wrench like any other Grims chest. Its 46 sub-chests travel with the item, and anything in the physical inventory drops to the ground. Carrying a loaded Void Chest slows you to 70% speed by default, the same as Iron and above. Carrying more loaded chests does not stack the slowdown.
No item display
Rotating item previews belong to the Glass Chest only. The Display Remote does nothing on a Void Chest. If you upgrade a Glass Chest that had a display, the display does not carry over.
Jack-in-the-Box Chest
A weathered Halloween toy box with a crank on the side and a pumpkin-headed jack inside. The jack's carved face flickers like candlelight. It is a special look, not a tier: storage works the same as a normal chest of that tier.
Getting one
Only administrators can give it, directly or as a voucher. There is no recipe. It starts as a Double Chest with 54 slots, a 27-slot physical inventory and every normal chest control.
Upgrading it
Upgrade it with the normal recipes, with the Jack-in-the-Box item in the centre: Copper, Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, Netherite, Glass and even Void. It keeps its Jack-in-the-Box model and name forever. The item's description shows its current tier and capacity. At Void tier it holds 45.5 double chests and uses the Void menu.
The pop-up
This show is for everyone around you. You see your chest menu; nearby players see the jack pop up:
- The crank turns.
- The lid flaps burst open.
- The jack springs up, overshoots and dips back.
- It sways from side to side while the chest stays open.
- When the last person closes it, the jack drops back in and the flaps shut.
Any kind of opening starts it: a sub-chest, the menu or the physical inventory. It makes the vanilla chest open and close sounds.
Redstone pop
Power a placed Jack-in-the-Box with redstone and the jack pops up and sways without anyone opening the chest. It works with a lever, button, pressure plate, redstone dust pointing into it, or a powered block beside it. When the power stops, it drops back in.
- The pop is only for show, and it's silent. The chest never opens and no items move. Hoppers are not affected.
- Only the holiday chests react. Other Grims chests ignore redstone.
- It works at every tier.
- After the power goes off there's a short cooldown (2.5 seconds by default) before redstone can pop it again. Power that comes back on sooner waits, then pops if it's still on, so flicking a lever can't spam the animation.
- Your server can turn it off.
Wrench lock
A Chest Wrench held within 15 blocks locks nearby Grims chests, and a locked Jack-in-the-Box stays shut, even while powered. Put the wrench away and a still-powered jack pops up again.
Christmas Toy Chest
A red lacquered toy chest with a green lid, a big red bow, gold corners and a snowflake medallion. Evergreen garland wraps around it, hung with coloured string lights that twinkle in a chase all the time, open or closed. Like the Jack-in-the-Box, it is a look, not a tier.
Getting and upgrading it
Only administrators can give it, directly or as a voucher. It starts as a Double Chest and upgrades with the normal recipes, with the Christmas Toy Chest item in the centre, all the way to Void. It keeps its Christmas look and name forever. The item's description shows its current tier and capacity.
Opening it
Nearby players see:
- The lid cracks open.
- It swings up, showing its candy-striped lining, and a decorated tree rises out of the chest.
- The tree springs up on a brass spring, past its resting height, and its star lights up.
- It sways from side to side while the chest stays open.
- When the last person closes it, the tree drops back in and the lid shuts.
You see your chest menu as usual. It makes the vanilla chest open and close sounds.
Redstone
Redstone opens it the same way as the Jack-in-the-Box: the lid swings up and the tree springs out without anyone opening the chest, silently, and it closes when the power stops. The same anti-spam cooldown applies. It has its own server settings, separate from the Jack-in-the-Box. A Chest Wrench nearby keeps it shut.
At night
On Java the string lights and the star glow in the dark. Bedrock shows the same lights and twinkle, without the glow.
Vouchers
A voucher is a glinting piece of paper named Voucher: … that turns into a command-only item. There are five:
| Voucher | Turns into |
|---|---|
| Jack-in-the-Box Chest | A Jack-in-the-Box Chest (a Double Chest) |
| Christmas Toy Chest | A Christmas Toy Chest (a Double Chest) |
| Chest Wrench | A Chest Wrench |
| Chest Display Remote | A Display Remote |
| Sorting Core | A Sorting Core |
To redeem one, hold it and right-click in the air or on a block. It turns into its item right there in your hand, so a full inventory doesn't matter. Right-clicking a chest, door or anything else with a voucher only redeems the voucher; it never opens or uses the block.
- Vouchers don't stack. Each one is a single item.
- Every chest from a voucher is brand new, with its own storage.
- Vouchers can't be used as paper in any recipe or workstation.
- You can trade, store or hold vouchers like any item until you want to redeem them.
Chest sounds
Every Grims chest makes the vanilla chest open and close sounds.
- Menus and sub-chests: the chest plays the vanilla sound when it opens and when it finally closes.
- Physical inventory: the real chest block plays its own vanilla sound. You never hear it twice.
- Redstone: the holiday chests open and close silently when redstone powers them.

Install or update

GrimsChests-0.4.10.jar. Keepchests.db: existing chests, contents and names stay intact.Merge the 0.4.0 pack content (
plugins/Packforge/contents/grims_chests/) and run/pf zipafter starting. In the active Geyser instance:
Do this File Add to packs/GrimsChests-Tiered-Pirate-Chests-0.4.0-Bedrock.mcpack(replace any earlier copy)Add to custom_mappings/grims_chests.json, the only GrimsChests mapping fileDelete from packs/The 0.3.0 chest .mcpack (same UUID, so Geyser would load only one of them) Delete from custom_mappings/grims_chests_wooden.json,grims_chests_tiers.json,grims_chests_emerald.json,grims_chests_sorter.json,grims_chests_tools.jsonRestart Geyser fully.
/geyser reloaddoes not reload mappings. Then reconnect Bedrock players.
grims_chests.json holds every GrimsChests mapping: the 0.3.0 chests, the tools, the Sorting Core and all three new chests. Without the 0.4.0 pack, the new chests show a missing model. The Bedrock pack's version is 0.4.2, so phones download the new copy.
Commands
These need grimschests.admin and also work from console, so crate plugins can run them.
| Command | Gives |
|---|---|
/gch give <player> void |
A Void Chest |
/gch give <player> jack |
A Jack-in-the-Box Chest at Double tier (halloween works too) |
/gch give <player> christmas |
A Christmas Toy Chest at Double tier (xmas works too) |
/gch give <player> <tier> <jack|christmas> |
A holiday chest at any storage tier, double to void (for testing) |
/gch givevoucher <player> <jack|christmas|wrench|remote|core> [amount] |
Vouchers, 1 to 36, one per free slot. If the player hasn't room for all of them, nothing is given or dropped |
For loot crates: give yourself a voucher with /gch givevoucher, then add the item in your hand to the crate. Vouchers carry no chest identity, so copies are safe. Don't put real holiday chests in crates: every copy of one chest item would point at the same chest.
The Auto Sort Chest can't take a holiday look. Crafting the Void Chest uses the normal grimschests.craft permission.

Note
A holiday chest at Glass tier keeps Glass storage and can take a display source, but its box hides the rotating preview.
Help
| Problem | Try this |
|---|---|
| The Void recipe does nothing | The centre must be a Grims Glass Chest item, not a placed chest or vanilla chest. Check whether your server uses Dragon's Breath or End Crystals. Craft one at a time without shift-click |
| A new chest shows a missing model | The server needs the 0.4.0 asset pack. Java players accept the rebuilt pack; Bedrock players reconnect after Geyser restarts |
| Bedrock players see invisible or wrong chests | Only grims_chests.json should be in custom_mappings/. Delete the five old grims_chests_*.json files and the 0.3.0 .mcpack, then restart Geyser |
| Phone players get the one-page Void menu | Touch menus need Grims Client Checker on the server. Players can pick with /gcc menu chests mobile. Controller and keyboard players on Bedrock get the standard page |
| A holiday chest won't react to redstone | Check jack-in-the-box.redstone or christmas-chest.redstone. Put nearby wrenches away. Dust must point into the chest, or power a block right beside it. Right after the power went off, it waits out its cooldown (2.5 seconds by default) |
| The jack or tree keeps swaying | Someone still has it open, or it is still powered |
| A voucher does nothing | Hold it in your hand and right-click. The player needs grimschests.redeem |
| I can't find the physical inventory in the Void menu | Crouch-interact the chest. The Void menu only shows its 46 chests |
